Bopp Challenges State Contractor Contribution Prohibition, PAC Requirements in Hawaii

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports here.  "The lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court on behalf of A-1 A-lectrician Inc. seeks to strike down the state's ban on political donations by state and county contractors. The suit also challenges state law guiding corporations to register as political action committees before making donations, political advertising reporting requirements, political advertising attribution and disclaimer provisions, and the $1,000 donation limit for political action committees....But open-government groups -- Common Cause Hawaii, the League of Women Voters of Hawaii, Americans for Democratic Action/Hawaii and Voter Owned Hawaii -- said Bopp's intent is to dismantle campaign finance regulations nationwide."

Honolulu Advertiser: Abercrombie can't transfer funds to campaign for Hawaii governor

The Honolulu Advertiser reports "U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie's race for the governor's office suffered a setback yesterday when a state commission ruled the veteran congressman cannot transfer more than $900,000 from his federal campaign fund to his gubernatorial campaign. . . . The state Campaign Spending Commission, in a 4-0 vote, said state law does not permit a candidate for state office to accept funds transferred from his or her federal campaign except for $6,000 from the federal committee itself."

Does Hawaii Campaign Finance Law Allow Rep. Abercrombie to Transfer $900,000 From His Congressional Campaign to His Gubernatorial Campaign?

The Honolulu Advertiser reports "Hawai'i Republicans have urged the state Campaign Spending Commission not to allow U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie to move more than $900,000 in federal campaign money to his governor's campaign. The state GOP said the congressman raised the money for a campaign for Congress, and that while federal and state campaign finance laws overlap, they are not identical. The party acknowledges that state law does not directly address the issue, but no previous Hawai'i political candidate has shifted federal money to a state campaign, and Republicans argue it would be improper."
